He was founder of the Storehouse group of companies, including Habitat and Conran Design, with retail outlets in the UK, the USA, and elsewhere. He has been influential in popularizing French country style in the UK. In 1964 he started the Habitat company, then developed Mothercare. Knighted 1983. The Storehouse group gained control of British Home Stores 1986.
